An Interview with Edwin Gonzalez
Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?
The ocean is my life, it fills my soul and inspires my imagination. Since I was very young, I have been intrigued by the sea, and growing up in Honduras gave me access to one of the most beautiful reefs in the world. As soon as I got the chance, I took a trip to Utila and started my scuba diving career. Now, all I want to do is share with as many people as possible the beauty and importance of our seas to inspire its conservation and protection.
How has diving changed your life?
Diving has given perspective and meaning to my life. It turned me into an explorer and has exposed me to situations that have led to incredible personal and spiritual growth. Through the sport, I've learned many things about myself and uncovered other passions like photography, videography, and adaptive scuba diving. Now I want to serve people through diving, either by capturing beautiful and inspiring content or through education and training.
What kind of diving do you like to do?
Any diving with sharks! I love reefs and wrecks where I can see the apex predator in its element
Tell us about one of the most incredible underwater experiences you've ever had.
Diving with whale sharks in Galapagos is by far the most incredible experience in my life. The size of the whale sharks we saw was impressive and truly unforgettable.
What are some of your favorite places underwater?
Galapagos because of the sharks. Okinawa for the crystal-clear water and pristine reefs.
What is your advice to someone considering diving?
Diving is for everyone. If you're curious about it, go for it. I guarantee that you will not regret it.
What would you tell people about the oceans?
Regardless of where you are, you can directly impact protecting the oceans. There are many ways to get involved in preserving our source of life and there's still a lot to get done.
What does diving mean to you?
Diving is community and adventure. The diving community is super diverse, but we are connected by a shared passion that leads us into the most unique adventures of our lives.
What's your favorite thing in your dive bag?
My Hydros Pro BCD is the best! The most comfortable BCD I've ever owned, and it makes a real difference to have amazing comfortable dives.
