An Interview with Brandon Clifford
Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?
I was lucky to grow up on an island where you feel the presence of the ocean every day. I spent as much time as I could on the water where I learned to swim, surf, dive and sail. During this time my dad was away working on shipwreck sites, and when I would visit him, I’d end up offshore on a boat with a crew of divers and maritime archaeologists. I learned about their work on the ocean and diving, taking as many courses as I could. As life progressed, I was able to be part of projects searching for shipwrecks, while getting to travel to new places in the world. These experiences helped shape the path I am on today.
What kind of diving do you like to do?
I enjoy working on shipwreck sites, diving in new places, free diving, and teaching my kids about diving and the ocean. I also like to dive and see tropical reefs.
Tell us about one of the most incredible underwater experiences you've ever had.
It’s hard to pick a single experience, but diving on the Whydah shipwreck site off Cape Cod over the years has been an incredible journey. It’s a beautiful, but difficult place to dive because the area is exposed to the open ocean, and it can be cold. We are constantly adapting to challenges while studying the site and learning about the history left behind.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about diving?
Sign up for a dive and go for it. Diving is a lot of fun and a great way to experience the world underwater.
What would you tell people about the oceans?
I’d tell people to do what you can to help protect the ocean for future generations. We need a healthy ocean to have a healthy planet. I try to make choices to minimize my impact on the environment and teach my children to do the same.
What products do you like most in your dive bag?
The SCUBAPRO MK25 Regulator and Hydros BCD. I also like a good frameless mask.
