An Interview with Annika Ziehen
Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?
Honestly it was a bit of a coincidence - I was in Koh Tao with my friend and we stayed at a resort that had a dive centre. Every day we would hang out by the pool or the beach and watched divers go out or come back and I just thought - this looks cool. As it was my birthday around the time I asked my dad to give me my OW and once I was done I extended my trip to get my AOW.
How has diving changed your life?
It has steered my career into a new direction (I am currently on the path of becoming a PADI instructor) and also installed a concern about our oceans and how we treat them in me - something we should all know but sometimes you need to experience something up close to start caring and acting.
What kind of diving do you like to do?
I like any diving in warm water, like really warm water. Lately I have started with sidemount and absolutely love it, and to my surprise I think I enjoy cave diving too - I am a bit scared of confined spaces but I like a challenge and the precision that comes with it.
Tell us about one of the most amazing experiences you have had underwater?
Oh so many! Night dives with mantas, seeing my first frog fish, crying underwater because a man broke my heart and realising how salt water makes it all better.
Where are some of your favorite places underwater?
Raja Ampat, Maldives and even Koh Tao still holds a very special place in my heart.
What is your advice to someone considering diving?
Don’t worry about the agency but find an instructor you get on with. Also, don’t chase certifications but rather invest in training and fun dives.
What would you tell people about the oceans?
That you would be lucky to see a shark and that Ariel was a fool for ever wanting to leave her ocean home.
What does diving mean to you?
It is my meditation and always takes me to my happy place. At the same time diving can be an unbelievable challenge which I take great pride in accepting!
What's your favorite thing in your dive bag?
I don’t like to pick favourites but I think my Scubapro Hydros.
