An Interview with Monika Hofbauer
Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?
When I was a child, I was fascinated from Jacques Cousteau films. My biggest childhood dream was to enter the underwater world
How has diving changed your life?
When I was 23 years old, I moved to Egypt to work as a liveaboard Dive guide. Since then I have been addicted to the Red Sea and diving.
What kind of diving do you like to do?
My favourite dives are wreck dives. I love the mixture between something man-made like a boat and nature. For me it´s incredible how quick the nature can turn a ship made of steel back into a reef.
Tell us about one of the most amazing experiences you have had underwater?
To be in the middle of a big school of hammerheads and being part of the hammerhead gang.
Where are some of your favorite places underwater?
Malpelo and Daedalus Reef, Brother Islands in Egypt, Red Sea
What is your advice to someone considering diving?
Do a diving course - you will not regret it.
What would you tell people about the oceans?
The oceans are the most precious resource we have, help protect it. Even small acts and donations help a lot. Carry a reef clean up bag with you on every dive and collect things that do not belong in the underwater world.
What does diving mean to you?
Everything. It’s the biggest passion in my life.
What's your favorite thing in your dive bag?
