Which is the best diving spot near you?
- The Ruhr in the beautiful Ruhr area.
What is there? What is special to experience there?
-
River diving in the Ruhr means not only experiencing nature, but also traveling back in time. A special kind of history lesson!
The dive site is also very varied, as it always changes a bit after a flood and new things are washed up and not just left in the bomb craters. It is not uncommon to encounter catfish, eels, zander, pike, carp and crayfish during a dive.
River diving is probably one of the least known and at the same time one of the most unique species of diving sports. Many items (including weapons) from bygone times are stored at the bottom of the Ruhr. Here, as is so often the case in diving, “look yes, touch no”
When is the best time to dive there?
- We usually dive the Ruhr on Friday evenings from April to October, followed by a barbecue. Appointments outside of this period are possible by arrangement.
What equipment do you recommend for the dive?
- In fact, due to its relatively flat structure, the Ruhr warms up much faster than our lakes, but also cools down more quickly. Of course, the Ruhr can be dived in a dry suit all year round, but in the months of June to September when the water temperature is around 20 degrees, wet or semi-dry suits are also suitable. Due to the various risks that river diving entails, you should never explore an (unknown) river on your own and strictly follow the safety regulations. Awareness and anticipatory diving due to rocks, stones, sunken trees or spillways have top priority. Therefore, a surface buoy is set during the dive.
How to get to the dive spot?
- We have access to a site that is located directly on the Ruhr. Since you can also park on this site, it is only about 50m from the car to the water.
Would you recommend a guide?
- In principle, guides are recommended, as the compass navigation can sometimes be a bit misleading due to the many metal objects in the Ruhr. However, it is also possible for experienced divers to dive independently after a briefing directly on the water. Minimum requirement for diving without a guide => AOWD with 30 dives, of which at least 20 must be in fresh water.
What courses can I do with you? How can the diver best contact you?
- We offer beginner and advanced training. From OWD to diving instructor and various special courses, basically all courses that a diver's heart desires can be completed. More at: Dive In Essen
