The SCUBAPRO + Mote Coral Restoration Program is back. We kicked off the season with a 20-diver group trip arranged by Black Flag Dive Center out of Tampa, Florida. The group had a fun time learning about coral reef ecology at Mote’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration.
The morning session was packed with engaging discussions and practical demonstrations on coral health, threats to reefs, and the importance of coral ecosystems. Participants got a hands-on experience with coral fragmentation techniques, which was an eye-opener for many. The dive plan was briefed by the highly qualified scientists at MOTE, highlighting the plans for the planting part of the process.
After a sandwich lunch, the group headed out for the diving portion of the program with Captain Hook’s Dive Center. Some light wind made the group decide to outplant corals at Looe Key before spending dive #2 cleaning the coral tree’s at Mote’s underwater nursery.
The team decided to outplant corals at Looe Key, where everyone actively participated in setting corals into their new homes on the reef. This involved using special epoxy to glue the coral fragments into the existing structure of the reef. Each team had a brush to clear away an area for the coral fragments to adhere to, a tray of coral fragments to plant, and enough epoxy to space the fragments properly. The second dive was dedicated to cleaning the coral trees at Mote’s underwater nursery. Participants were hands-on, contributing to the restoration efforts under the expert guidance of seasoned dive instructors, ensuring each coral was carefully placed and tended. This direct involvement in coral restoration was an enriching and fulfilling experience for all the divers.
In total, the group planted over 300 corals of carefully selected genotypes out on the reef to help Mote continue their coral research.
"It was truly inspiring to see everyone so engaged and enthusiastic about coral restoration. Witnessing firsthand the impact we can make, combined with the joy and camaraderie amongst the divers, was just incredible. Every participant left with a deeper understanding and a strong desire to protect our oceans. These are the experiences that remind us why we dive and why we protect our blue planet."

"It was inspiring to capture the dedication and excitement of our divers as they participated in the coral restoration efforts. Seeing everyone come together to make a positive impact on our reefs is truly heartwarming. We're excited to share more of these moments and continue raising awareness about marine conservation."
