An Interview with Pau Lorente
Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?
For years, I dedicated myself to studying mechanics, but just three years ago, I decided to try diving, and that experience completely changed my life. At first, I had no idea about the beauty hidden underwater or the vital importance of our oceans. It was a discovery that opened my eyes and my mind. Since then, diving has not only become my passion but also my way of life.
How has diving changed your life?
Diving has completely transformed my life in every way. I used to know almost nothing about the oceans, but now I dedicate my time and energy to understanding their importance and appreciating the life they hold. Working in such a wild and unique environment is an experience beyond value. My dream is to explore all the world’s oceans, capturing and filming their marine ecosystems to showcase their incredible beauty and diversity to the world.
What kind of diving do you like to do?
I thoroughly enjoy recreational diving, but my greatest dream as a diver is to transition into technical diving and, one day, venture into the world of cave diving, exploring cenotes and underwater caves. Even so, I always find immense joy in recreational diving and experiencing the wonders the ocean has to offer.
Tell us about one of the most amazing experiences you have had underwater?
The most incredible experience I've had underwater happened during a dive in the Red Sea. While we were submerged, a hammerhead shark emerged from the depths, and shortly after, an ocean manta ray began to circle around us. It was an indescribable moment, full of awe and a deep connection with nature.
Where are some of your favorite places underwater?
So far, my favorite place to dive has been the Red Sea, with its stunning coral reefs. Although I’ve been diving for a short time and haven’t traveled much yet, I’ve always dreamed of diving in Malpelo, a truly unique destination. Most of my dives, however, are in the Mediterranean, near my home. It’s a very special place for me, as it hosts a unique ecosystem that deeply connects me to the sea.
What is your advice to someone considering diving?
Diving is a true privilege, a therapy that connects you with the ocean in a unique way. The sensation of weightlessness and the peace you feel underwater are unmatched, something you won’t find anywhere else. Each dive offers an opportunity to explore, relax, and be amazed by the beauty of the marine world. If you ever get the chance to try it, I assure you it will change your perspective on the world.
What would you tell people about the oceans?
I would tell them that the oceans are much more than vast bodies of water; they are the heart of our planet. They provide us with oxygen, regulate the climate, and are home to an incredible biodiversity. However, they are in danger, and we need to take care of them. They are fragile, but they also have an incredible ability to heal themselves if we give them the chance. The oceans connect us to the world in a deep way, and exploring them, whether by diving or learning more about them, allows us to discover something truly unique and beautiful. It is our responsibility to protect them for future generations.
What does diving mean to you?
Diving for me is a way to disconnect from the world and find peace underwater. It’s a space where I feel in harmony with nature, as if I’m part of something much bigger. Each dive amazes me and reminds me of how important it is to protect our oceans. It’s my way of feeling alive and connected, both with the sea and with myself.
What's your favorite thing in your dive bag?
The camera has become an essential tool for me to convey what I feel underwater. Through my content, I can show what few have the opportunity to see and experience. While many people dive, very few truly know what lies beneath the surface of our oceans. I feel I owe so much to the sea, and my way of giving back is by sharing its beauty and importance through what I film and share with others.
