Where are the best dive spots near you?

What makes the Canary isles such an extraordinary and memorable diving location is not just the incredible aquatic diversity surrounding the islands, but also the unique topography that has been structured over millions of years due to the volcanic plate movement.

Every dive site has its unique attractions, if it is for courses, fun dives or survey diving. However, here are 3 favorites diving location of our Instructors.

-          Our first choice, Pal-Mar Cave is arguably our favorite locations on the island. It is exploding with all sorts of life. From huge Atlantic stingrays to the inner beauty of the Tiger Morays. This dive site always leaves us with amazing memories and wanting to get back in the water.

-           Our second choice, and a favorite to many of our divers and professionals is a picturesque location called Las Eras. This location consists of a remarkable number of swim-throughs, over hangs and drop offs to explore and investigate. It a site that can be enjoyed for all levels!

-          And our last but definitely not least choice is a wreck dive called ‘El Penon’, which is a 110ft tug boat. This wreck was placed just off shore in a town called ‘Tabiaba’ in order for two reasons, divers and to bring back the aquatic life at this location, and what an astonishing job it has done. To see how changing the ecosystem in a certain way can have such a positive knock on effect is extremely humbling.

What would you see at the dive site(s)?

  • At all the diving locations will have the usual locals. This can be the grumpy damsel fish to the curious octopus. There are also two different types of the animal kingdom you will find around the isles, the macro and micro. In the macro section, you will find all different species of stingrays, turtles, barracudas, Angelshark and many more different animals. The micro inhabitants maybe a little hard to see/find but they stand shoulder to shoulder with their gigantic reef neighbors. A few of the micro creatures include the beautiful Flabellines with her fiery pink colours and her close cousin, Senor Vaquita, which means ‘little cow’ in Spanish, which is a very accurate statement to our underwater farm yard friends.

The Canarian waters are home to some of the most diverse diving spots in all of Europe and without a doubt an underestimated destination!

When is the best time to go?

  • An amazing thing about the Canarian isles is the fact it is all year round diving! With lows of none below 18 ℃ to highs of 25 ℃. Through the months of march to September, the waters are increasing in temperature, so summer time is a very popular time of year. However, through the months of September to December are arguably the busiest times of year.  The Christmas period is always a busy time! There are no time limits on diving here, AM or PM, all daydiving is the usual work schedule and without a doubt we recommend our night dives to see the incredible change in marine life from day to night!

Recommended gear for the dive?

  • Depending on your own personal comfort. You do not need any special equipment. The majority of divers here dive in 5mm which is definitely sufficient. However, people are diving in shorties or dry suits, as long as you are comfortable.
  • We at Aquarius are a fully equipped PADI 5 star IDC and TecRec center. We have high quality and up to date scubapro equipment for rental for all courses, from sidemount to technical diving!

How do you get to the dive site?

  • A lot of the diver centers in the Canary isles do both shore and boat dives. As Tenerife is a volcanic island, you do not need to go far off the coast to see the amazing topography and aquatic life. At Aquarius we are 500m away from the harbor, so when we are doing boat dives, we pack the van up and drive down to our boat.

What is the dive depth and visibility like?

               - Pal-Mar is a bit more of an advanced dive. You will drop down the anchor into 12m of water. Then over the edge and down to the cave which is at 30m.

              - Las Eras is a dive for all levels. You can stay and enjoy the beautiful scenery and marine life between 10m-18m. However, for the more experience divers, we can dive down to 28m to explore the drop offs and caves.

              - El Peñon is not a difficult dive, however, to enjoy the entire wreck, you will need to be an Advanced Open Water or higher. The wreck starts at 22m and finishes at 34m.

In Tenerife, the visibility has an average of around 15m which makes the dives extremely beautiful. However, some days it can increase to 20m+ and on rare days can bearound 5m.

How many dives a day can be done?

  • For us, depending on the location and types of dives. We usually do 2 dives a day, however, if our customers would like to do a night dive as well, then 3 dives are easily achieved.

Who takes the divers out?

  • At Aquarius Dive Center, we are very lucky to have a Divemaster Leader, two PADI instructors and a Master Instructor, working like a well-oiled machine.  We are a multi-lingual dive center that strive to be the best. Each individual brings a unique trait to the center.
