Event Journal
We’re proud to share the story of our first group restoration event, which took place July 22, 2023 at Mote’s Key Largo facility and off the coast of Islamorada. Four Scubapro dealers joined the Mote Marine Laboratory team on a successful day working to restore our coral reefs. The event showed us that these efforts can take many forms.
Leading up to the event the water in the Florida Keys was uncharacteristically warm, leading to mass bleaching up and down the coast. This created an urgent need to protect many of the corals living in Mote’s underwater nursery, and our divers worked to remove corals of specific genotypes from this nursery for relocation into land nurseries. On the second dive, the group assisted Mote in conducting a Bleach Watch survey, lending many hands to collect a vast amount of data in a short period of time.
While our itinerary changed, we maintained the theme of lending many hands to help Mote’s coral reef restoration program. The thing that matters is providing the help that is needed at the time it’s needed.
