An Interview with Rodrigo Friscione

Why did you decide to take the giant stride into the oceans?

It was a matter of family tradition for me, my father established one of the very first dive shops in Cancun in the late 70s.

How has diving changed your life?

I think scuba diving -or even snorkeling- opens a window to a completely different world. You connect with nature in a way that has mostly been lost on dry land.

What kind of diving do you like to do?

My favorite dives are offshore, looking for big pelagic marine life.

Tell us about one of the most amazing experiences you have had underwater?

One of the most moving dives of my life was in Socorro when a pair of humpback whales allowed us to have an intimate encounter. They stayed motionless for 30+ minutes while we dove around them at arm’s length. Looking at their eyes looking back at me was deeply moving!

Where are some of your favorite places underwater?

Mexico has great diving all around: Socorro to Cozumel. I loved diving the wild coast of South Africa as well.

What is your advice to someone considering diving?

I think the two most important things are getting a good instructor and most importantly getting experience. Get comfortable in the water before you start pushing yourself to more challenging conditions!

What would you tell people about the oceans?

The ocean looks too big for us to have an impact on it, but it’s not and we do. We all need to see the ocean as the engine of the world we live in and take care of it in that way!

What does diving mean to you?

Diving is not only my way to make a living but it’s my life. The ocean is the place where I feel the happiest and most fulfilled.

What's your favorite thing in your dive bag?

My MK25 regulator - by far. It has been with me for years and it will be with me for many more.
